TOOL TRAINING - EMERGENCY RESPONSE
The toolkit “EMERGENCY RESPONSE PLANNING FOR HEAVY RAIN RISKS“ is developed by RAINMAN partner “Office of the Styrian Government”. In the pilot action Saxony, the municipalities Oderwitz and Spitzkunnersdorf are currently testing the toolkit with regard to usability and understanding and will propose suggestions for improvement.
On Thursday, November 7th, the RAINMAN team from the Saxon State Office for Environment, Agriculture and Geology invited the local stakeholders (municipality staff, lower water authority and volunteer fire-fighters) of both municipalities to a tool training workshop that focuses on the emergency response toolkit.
In the first part of the event, the team of the Saxon State Office for Environment, Agriculture and Geology informed the participants about current activities within RAINMAN and introduced the emergency response toolkit to those who were unfamiliar with it. Afterwards, the discussion round started. The municipalities reported about their current state of work, faced problems and particular useful materials. Their feedback will help to improve the toolkit further.
In the second part of the event, “HoWa-innovativ”, a German project about early flood warning in small catchments, presented the latest results of their activities. They discussed especially with the local fire brigades about alert preferences for early warning and the design of an early warning system user interface.
During the training it became clear that the municipalities are very interested in improving their knowledge regarding the reduction of heavy rain risks. The discussions were very fruitful and gave valuable insights into the user applicability of the toolkit. The results of the discussions will be used to improve the toolkit.
