Radar Technology from the 3D Printer

In current times, the application of radar technologies has gained in high relevance: parking the car with the help of radar sensors is part of everyday life and the application of radar sensors for distance and environment measurements in industrial automation is quite apparent. However, there are still some challenges addressing the individuality of application modes, small production volumes and high manufacturing costs. The newly established research laboratory DiFeMiS (Digital Production of THz Microelectronic Systems) at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) contributes to this research gap and develops printing technologies for precise high frequency systems up to the terahertz range while aiming at providing individual, small and economic solutions. The centrepiece of the research lab is a configurable and micrometre-precise printing platform for the realisation of highly flexible and economic installation and connection technologies (packaging). Funding for the research laboratory is provided by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).
